LIBERTY STATUE
For 30 years, a 1/5-scale replica of the Statue of Liberty stood atop the Liberty National Life Insurance Company’s Corporate Center as the company’s icon and a landmark for Downtown Birmingham. Three decades of weather took its toll on the bronze statue, and Liberty National’s parent company, Torchmark Corporation, hired Giattina Aycock Architecture Studio, Inc. to coordinate the restoration and design a home for their Lady Liberty in a new suburban development, where she would be accessible to the public.
The result is Liberty Park, a landscaped clearing at the edge of forested Appalachian foothills just outside Birmingham. Within the park, GA Studio designed a circular raised plaza tucked into the wooded site, lined with fountains and cherry trees and centered with a granite star edged in bronze. From the center of the star rises a 60-foot tall granite pedestal supporting Lady Liberty, restored to her original condition and newly visible from Interstate 459 as a beacon for the new development. |
