Giattina Aycock Architecture Studio Odd Lots Projects
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
Birmingham Headquarters
When the Boy Scouts of America asked Giattina Aycock Architects to design their new Birmingham headquarters building expressive of their vision as “A bridge to the future,” GA Studio took their inspiration from the Roman Aqueducts to create a structure which is both building and bridge.
The office spaces are laid out between two parallel arcades of stacked granite rubble masonry. Each dramatic arch is glazed with a single span of double-paned glass in concealed framing, and interior partitions are transparent to facilitate views through the building to the landscape beyond. The arcades stretch between two hills, capped with a green roof, planted with native grasses and wildflowers. A flagstone entry path displays the etched names of every Eagle Scout in Birmingham’s recorded history.
