Giattina Aycock Architecture Studio Justice Projects
JEFFERSON COUNTY JAIL
When inmate population outnumbered its jail capacity, Jefferson County hired Giattina Aycock Architecture Studio to take care of the problem, from beginning to end. GA Studio authored a document of Need Assessment, determined site selection, and ultimately designed a unique, self-contained system of structures to efficiently house all criminal judicial functions on one half of a city block, directly across the street from the County Courthouse.
The new Jefferson County Criminal Justice Center is comprised of two nine-story high-rise buildings connected by a secure corridor. The first high-rise houses the County Jail, designed for a maximum of 612 inmates, with outdoor exercise areas on each floor and on the roof; administrative offices; intake, holding and pre-trial screening. The second high-rise is the County’s Criminal Courts Building, containing criminal district and circuit courts, the district attorney’s offices, part of the sheriff’s department, and the administrative offices of the criminal courts system.
