DOMESTIC RELATIONS COURTS
Domestic Relations Courts administer the separation or dissolution of marriages. These are considered the most stressful and potentially violent courts in the judicial system. The design team’s goal was to recognize the separation of the parties, while offering a physical environment to help relieve the stress of what happens here.
Stress relief is sought through clarity of circulation and function, as indicated by open stairways to the second floor where waiting, courtrooms, and support areas are identifiable. The monitored court waiting room is separated into two areas by a solid wall, limiting interaction of opposing sides. Continuous circulation patterns omit dead ends or potential pockets for entrapment.
Indirect lighting reflects from sculpted ceilings to soften waiting areas and courtrooms. Views to the exterior, while rare in contemporary courtrooms, provide valuable moments of relief. A light, neutral palette of clear finished maple, gray stone, painted plaster, buffed stainless steel and carpeted floors combine to offer a warm and quiet atmosphere for trying proceedings. |
