JEFFERSON COUNTY COURTHOUSE
This unique challenge entailed the complete restoration of a 500,000 sf vintage courthouse, ca. 1929, and the addition of 50,000 sf of growth space, all the while maintaining courtroom functions and public access to the entire complex.
The design team embarked on a multi-faceted, ten-year phased project to complete the task. The project included rebuilding the central plant and air distribution system, replacing all plumbing and mechanical piping and wiring, installing a communications system and upgrading security features.
The magnitude and significance of this project suggested a sizeable commitment of time and money. Conscious of their stewardship of public funds, the architects orchestrated the restoration to complement the past while simultaneously suggesting the future. Courtrooms are classic, traditional, and prominent with authoritative judge’s benches and sturdy seating. Details such as stone tile patterns, light fixtures and drinking fountains were researched and recreated.
State-of-the-art, non-stop security systems were carefully integrated to meet post-9/11 Federal regulations with minimal intrusion to the building’s architectural character.
