Giattina Aycock Architecture Studio Education Projects
UAB BARTOW ARENA
As it grew from a satellite campus to become a university in its own right, the University of Alabama at Birmingham built an athletic department which demanded a multi-use competition arena. To this end, Giattina Aycock Architecture Studio designed a flexible, energy-efficient, metamorphic machine.
The maple playing floor acts as three practice cross-courts or one centered full-size collegiate court with 6,000 permanent seats at the sidelines. The telescoping platforms pull out for an additional 2,000 seats, and a first grade portable playing floor transforms the space into a first class competition arena with spectators within ten feet of the court’s edge. Remove the competition court, install a portable stage and blackout curtain on one end, and the arena converts to a convocation hall, complete with state-of-the-art sound system and theatrical lighting. Under the seat decks is a day-lit concourse flanked with concession stands and restrooms.
