Giattina Aycock Architecture Studio Education Projects
ELTON B. STEPHENS SCIENCE LABORATORY
Phillips Hall was constructed in the first decade of the 20th century to house science classrooms and laboratories for Birmingham Southern College. By 1990, the science program had outgrown its building both physically and technologically. To solve the problem, Giattina Aycock Architecture Studio was asked to renovate and expand the existing building to create state-of-the-art laboratory space within the College’s tight campus of historic structures.
To avoid interruption of classes within and around the existing Hall, the design team conceived a 16,000 square foot annex contiguous to Phillips. Respectful of its historic setting, the annex is clad in traditional brick and limestone. Simple forms and clean lines express modern concepts consistent with the newly-equipped laboratories and advanced pursuits fostered within. Large spans of glass fill interior spaces with natural light and campus views.
