FIRST COMMERCIAL BANK – CRESTLINE
Giattina Aycock Architecture Studio, Inc., was challenged to incorporate a new 5,000 square foot bank branch within the existing downtown fabric of Mountain Brook’s Crestline Village. The building was charged to both serve as a professional icon and appropriately intermingle within the architecture of its surroundings.
The resulting building is comprised of two interlocking boxes which combine to stretch the length of the block. A rhythmic arcade of brick with deep-set clear glazing defines the public lobby and relates its interior space to its neighboring commercial storefronts. The heavier massing of dry-stacked granite rubble, wrapping the service spaces behind, speaks of security and privacy. Custom details such as intricate copper awnings, writing counters of stone on stainless steel framework add delicacy to the permanence of the masonry shell.
In the end, a once-divided street front is knitted together with simple forms and bold materials to provide an identity for the client and an anchor for the village streetscape.
